A product built around constant server contact will face real friction in these environments.

There is also the language gap. For a screenless, voice-first device to work in African homes, OpenAI would need to substantially improve its natural language processing for local languages and accents, a gap that remains wide across most of the company's current products. High import duties and retail pricing will likely restrict early adoption to affluent urban households in the short term.

Still, the underlying APIs present an opening. African developers who build on OpenAI's platform could use this hardware push as a prompt to create localized home automation tools, even if the device itself remains out of reach for most users on the continent.
